I remember reading somewhere that when that happened it was possible to get to Monroe by boat because there were other breaches. Whether that is true I really cannot say but obviously that even changed a lot of things.
I think that at some point there was a museum in Greenville dedicated to it. It surely is interesting from an historical point but there were a lot of aspects to that period that don’t put my native state in a good light, although folks are creatures of their time. I agree. I know there were efforts to prevent the rescue and evacuation of farm laborers because they’d be tempted not to return, which of course did happen in many cases, and good things came of that.
