Trump won Mississippi by 217,366 votes in 2020, and on the same ballot, CHS beat Mike Espy by only 130,820 votes. To me that says the Espy campaign did an outstanding job competing against CHS but not enough to overcome the enthusiasm of voters who went to the polls to support Trump. This year, Trump isn't on the ballot to carry CHS across the line, and he has a negative approval rating in MS now anyway.
So, I tend to be less focused on where precisely the candidates fall on the ideological spectrum and more focused on CHS's results. According to the state economist, real wages in Mississippi have been declining ever since they peaked in March 2025. See page 12: https://www.mississippi.edu/sites/default/files/ihl/files/msbus0826.pdf
Additionally, the state economist reports that under current policy, Mississippi is projected to have negative job growth and low state GDP growth over the next five years despite having robust job growth and state GDP growth over the last five years. See page 4: https://www.mississippi.edu/sites/default/files/ihl/files/mseconout%20su26.pdf
The state economist has explained in interviews that the reasons why we've gone from having such wonderful growth in 2023-2024 to having a stagnant economy from 2025-present are the trade war and the Iran war. Those are CHS's policies. I think the damage CHS has done to MS's economy is the main issue that voters deserve to know about.
