The nonprofit Committee to Protect Journalists announced on July 8, 2025, that ICE continues to defy a court order to release Spanish-language reporter Mario Guevara, who was detained by local law enforcement while livestreaming a “No Kings” protest on June 14 in the Atlanta metro area. Guevara has covered immigrant issues in the U.S. for the past 20 years, and was working in the country legally at the time of his arrest, according to CPJ.
A federal judge ruled on July 1 that Guevara can be released from ICE custody on bond. ICE, CPJ reported, “has refused to comply with the judge’s release order and denied Guevara’s bail, listing him as ‘Not Releasable’ on July 7.” The organization is “outraged at this attack on #PressFreedom, and calls for Guevara’s immediate release.”
